Mark Geiger



Mark Geiger, 39, was selected in January to referee at this summer’s World Cup, becoming the first American since 2002 to be chosen. The honor was 25 years in the making for Geiger, who refereed at the 2000 National Championships — as well as a half-dozen US Youth Soccer Region I Championships and several US Youth Soccer New Jersey State Cups — before eventually becoming a regular referee for Major League Soccer. Region I teams earn their place



The 2014 US Youth Soccer Region I Premier League championship finals took place this past weekend, as both finalists in the Under-13 through Under-17 Boys and Girls age groups earned automatic qualification into the prestigious US Youth Soccer National League for the 2014-15 season. Fabian Johnson



Despite mixing and matching throughout his brief US career in the midfield and on both sides of a back line in need, Fabian Johnson told reporters at USMNT camp on Thursday that he expects for Jurgen Klinsmann to use him as a defender when the tournament opens next month in Brazil. Jills Ellis to be USWNT coach?

U.S. Soccer will name Jill Ellis the new head coach of the U.S. Women’s National Team on Friday, a source with knowledge of the hiring process confirmed to SBI on Thursday evening. USA Today has also confirmed it will be Ellis. Read more here.
