U.S. Soccer Mandate Regarding Age Group Registration by Calendar Birth Year to be Implemented in 2016-17

US Soccer has mandated that all affiliated organizations register players based on birth years. US Youth Soccer competitions (which includes the MRL) will be implementing age group calendar year registration and competitions beginning with the 2016-17 soccer year.

Remember that teams competing in age groups during the 2015-16 soccer year are competing to qualify for slots in the next age group for the 2016-17 soccer year. For example: teams in Under-13 (2002-2003) during the 2015-16 soccer year are competing for 2002 age group slots (labeled U-15 by US Soccer) in the 2016-17 soccer year; teams in Under-14 (2001-2002) during the 2015-16 soccer year are competing for 2001 age group slots (labeled as U-16 by US Soccer) in the 2016-17 soccer year; teams in Under-15 (2000-2001) during the 2015-16 soccer year are competing for 2000 age group slots (labeled U-17 by US Soccer)in the 2016-17 soccer year; and so on. Here is the age group chart evolution with MRL age groups highlighted in yellow: How MRL Age Groups will Evolve for 2016-17

Thus the MRL, in 2016-17, will offer the following age groups: 2003 birth year (labeled U-14 by US Soccer), 2002 birth year (labeled U-15 by US Soccer), 2001 birth year (labeled U-16 by US Soccer), 2000 birth year (labeled U-17 by US Soccer), 1999 birth year (labeled U-18 by US Soccer) and 1998 birth year (labeled U-19 by US Soccer). More information on competition structure, including the youngest age groups where there may be high school soccer conflicts, will be presented at the Club Directors of Coaching Meeting in Baltimore on Friday, January 15, 2016.
