TUKWILA, Wash. (March 26, 2014) – The Washington Youth Soccer Coaching Department has announced the next two sessions in a series of Special Topics Coaching Seminars geared toward helping all levels of coaching within Washington Youth Soccer.  The topics for the next two sessions are “Goalkeeping for U-10 and up” and “Team Building.”  The Special Topics Coaching Seminars are led by Washington Youth Soccer Technical Director Timo Liekoski and Washington Youth Soccer Director of Coaching Education Shannon Murray, as well as special guest speakers.

The first session, titled “Do’s and Some Don’ts,” was led by Liekoski, Murray and Section Head of the Virginia Mason Sports Medicine Department and Seattle Sounders FC Medical Director, Dr. Michael Morris.  The first session was geared toward the Under-5 to Under-12 recreational coach and held March 19th for 38 registered coaches of all levels. 

The Special Topics Seminars are free and open to anybody who would like to attend, however space is limited so register now.

Gwynne Williams is the former Director of Coaching and Player Development for Alabama Youth Soccer and previously served as the assistant coach of the New England Revolution of MLS from 2007-2010.  During his tenure with the Revolution, the club saw its most successful period in franchise history to date.  Williams has been involved with the US Youth Soccer Olympic Development Program (ODP) as a staff coach since 1994, and has been an Instructional Staff Coach with the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) since 1998.

Rob Walker is a U.S. Soccer “A” Licensed coach who serves as a Washington Youth Soccer State Licensing Instructor and U.S. Soccer National Licensing Instructor.  Walker has previously served as a staff goalkeeper coach for both the U.S. Soccer Men’s and Women’s Olympic teams as well as US Youth Soccer ODP goalkeeper and staff coach.

Sigi Schmid is the head coach for Seattle Sounders FC of Major League Soccer.  One of the most successful collegiate and professional coaches of all time, Schmid has guided teams to four MLS Cups and claimed two championships, four Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup championships, two MLS Supporters’ Shield trophies, a CONCACAF Champions Cup title and three NCAA championships.  Schmid has been named MLS Coach of the Year twice and NCAA Coach of the Year once, and has also coached for U.S. National Teams at various levels, including being named an assistant to the 1994 World Cup team.

Washington Youth Soccer Technical Director, Timo Liekoski, was a collegiate All-American and professional player before he began coaching in 1972.  Liekoski has coached at the U.S. National Team, Professional, Collegiate and Youth levels, and also serves as a consultant for the U.S. and Finland soccer federations. 

Murray, Washington Youth Soccer Director of Coaching Education, is also a former collegiate and professional player who now serves as a U.S. Soccer National Instructor and coach for the Washington Youth Soccer Elite Player Development (EPD) program.
