State's Top Teams Take Home The Hardware at Virginia Mason Challenge Cup and US Youth Soccer Washington State Championships

May 5, 2014 04:37 PM

They're three of the biggest weekends of the year in youth soccer in the state of Washington — and this year, they had the star power to prove it.

Nearly 150 teams passed through the doors of Tukwila's Starfire Sports over the last three weekends, each with one purpose in mind — to win a State Cup title. The state's two highest-level Cup tournaments — the Virginia Mason Challenge Cup and Virginia Mason US Youth Soccer Washington State Championships — came to exciting conclusions this month, with semi-finals and finals action — 111 games in all.

The stakes were so high, that even some of Washington Youth Soccer's most famous alumni came out to catch the action. FIFA Player of the Century Michelle Akers, herself a former Washington Youth Soccer State Cup champion, joined the fun this past weekend, signing autographs for the youth soccer players and their families in attendance, and serving as a physical reminder of just how far a young player's dream can take them.

While long-term dreams may include Akers' two FIFA World Cup titles and Olympics, dreams this month included not only the title of State Champion but, for certain teams, the chance to test their mettle against the top teams from other states throughout Region IV.

Champions from the US Youth Soccer Washington State Championships in the U12 through U18 age groups advance to the US Youth Soccer Region IV Championships this June in Albuquerque to battle the state champions and Far West Regional League champions from the other 13 western states.  A berth to the US Youth Soccer National Championships, the oldest and most prestigious youth soccer national championship in the country, is on the line for those teams that earned their place at Regionals.

Winning teams and select wildcards in the U13 age groups and up of the Challenge Cup first divisions will travel to Morgan Hill, Calif., in June to compete in the US Youth Soccer Region IV Presidents Cup and a chance to advance to the National Presidents Cup competition in South Carolina this July.

Last year, Washington's Eastside FC 98 Red advanced to the Region IV Championships and then just kept on winning, right on to the US Youth Soccer National Championship, the first for a Washington team since 1999. Will one of the champions listed below be the next to hoist the national championship trophy?
