2016 Army-Navy Cup To Take Place September 23

Army-Navy Cup Soccer To Celebrate 5th Anniversary Sept. 23

Fifth annual match, Army-Navy Cup V, returns to Talen Energy Stadium

CHESTER, Pa. (July 21, 2016) – Army-Navy Cup V, one of the top collegiate soccer attractions in the nation, will take place at Talen Energy Stadium, home of Philadelphia Union of Major League Soccer at 7 pm on Friday, Sept. 23. The renewal of this extraordinary rivalry at this venue continues to grow. It has attracted more than 20,000 fans and supporters over the past two seasons.

“Given our location, equidistant between both academies, this event was created in the spirit of the Army-Navy Football Classic, a long-time Philadelphia sports institution,” offered Philadelphia Union Chief Business Officer Tim McDermott. “We are honored that the soccer communities of both Annapolis and Army West Point have truly found a home here at Talen Energy Stadium.  We recognize how special this event is and look forward to welcoming both teams and alumni back to the area on September 23.”

After winning the previous two years, in overtime, Navy suffered a 2-1 setback to Army West Point last year, in this regular season Patriot League match-up between the two academies. This year, Navy is once again the home team and the Midshipmen are looking to seize the cup away from the Black Knights of the Hudson.

“The annual Army-Navy men's soccer match is a highlight of our fall sports season,” said Navy Director of Athletics Chet Gladchuk. “ Talen Energy Stadium is a magnificent venue and brings the ‘whole package’ for this great event. The players, coaches and fans have thoroughly enjoyed the fantastic environment and every game has been a fight right to the finish. Our thanks to everyone who makes this happen.”

After a tie in the inaugural match-up, Army West Point got its first taste of success last November and the 350 or so Cadets and Army personnel on hand, experienced an amazing on-field celebration once the final score had been secured. So it’s safe to say this the Cadets aren’t about to give up the cup, without a scuffle.

“We look forward to returning to the Philadelphia area for the fifth installment of Army-Navy Cup this fall, stated Army West Point Director of Athletics Boo Corrigan. “This has become a special event for our cadets, alumni and fans. We are grateful to everyone at Philadelphia Union and Talen Energy Stadium for providing a tremendous showcase for this historic rivalry.”

Amidst a very family-friendly environment, filled with military assets, plus interactive and educational events adjacent to the game, Army-Navy Cup V will be broadcast live, nationally on the American Sports Network, a subsidiary of Sinclair Broadcasting. Additional broadcast and sponsorship information will be announced in the weeks ahead.
