The 2003 Boys Wyoming 307 Soccer Team defeated Grotta KR (Iceland) 3-2 on Saturday to claim the 15U Boys Silver Division title at the Schwan’s USA Cup 2018 in Blaine, Minnesota. The select team, comprised of 14- and 15-year old players from Casper, Cheyenne, Cody, Lander, Laramie, Powell, Sheridan, and Torrington, also defeated a Brazilian team 3-1 in route to the championship. The team recently competed in tournaments in Park City, Utah and Phoenix, Arizona.
Coach Jay Mahylis said, “I couldn’t be prouder of the effort of our boys. Winning a championship in this type of tournament is not easy. They played superbly.”
The tournament, advertised as the largest youth soccer tournament in America, included over 1,500 teams and 15,000 players from twenty states and twenty countries.
Assistant Coach Stacey Umbach, added, “I was really impressed with the play of our team. To beat teams from countries like Iceland and Brazil really showcases the caliber of soccer we play in Wyoming.”
The team is part of the Wyoming Soccer Association’s newly-formed 307 Select Program. This program enables the state’s top players, from ages 9-19, to compete at high-caliber tournaments throughout the nation.
