WILSON, N.C. (Nov. 19, 2010) – Clear skies and light winds welcomed the Under-15, Under-16 and Under-17 US Youth Soccer National League Boys to day two of games at the Wilson Gillette Soccer Complex in Wilson, N.C.
The National League teams are elite club soccer teams with an individual proven track record of success in US Youth Soccer programs and are among the nation's best, which creates another significant opportunity for the nation's collegiate, professional and national team staffs to see players in an environment of meaningful play.
The first place team from each division (blue and red) age group will earn a ticket to the 2011 US Youth Soccer National Championships making each match valuable to the team's fate as it could make or break their chance at competing for a National Championship.
Some highlights from today's matches…
Under-15 Boys
The reigning Region I Champions,
Lehigh Valley United 95 (E-PA), had a 5
th minute Daniel Busichio opener against
95 CSA Charlotte SA Predators (NC) in the Under-15 Boys red division.Eduardo Iturbide hit the 9
th minute equalizer for CSA, but Colby Thomas countered for Lehigh Valley a minute later. The 2-1 score held for Lehigh Valley's first win in league play.
In the Under-15 Boys red division, National Team player Jorge Calix gave
Team America 95 Stripes (VA) the early 1-0 lead over
Michigan Jaguars (MI) with a 3rd minute goal. The Jaguars countered in the 22nd for a 1-1 score at the half. Team America took the 2-1 lead with a 55th minute Alberto Polo goal for the win.
LAFC Houstonians 96 (S-TX) were up 1-0 at the half over
SDFC 09 Gauchos (NJ) compliments of a Shareef El-Saadi goal in the 29
th. The Houstonians' Flavio Bonavides upped the lead by one in the 51
st, but Alexander Patel countered for SDFC in the 65
th for a 2-1 score. In the 80
th minute Bonavides came through with his second goal for the 3-1 Houstonians' win.
Under-16 Boys
In the first two days of league play, half of the Under-16 Boys blue games played have ended in a tie, speaking to the evenly matched competition the National League presents as it brings together the nation's top teams. One of the ties came today between Minnesota Thunder Academy (MN) and
CESA 94 Premier (SC) in a game that ended with zeros. This marked CESA's second tie in league play.
In the Under-16 Boys blue division,
Sockers Cup (IL) were coming off of a day-one tie looking to put one in the win column today.
Reston Knights FC (VA) held Sockers at bay until the 45
th minute when Caleb Pothast knocked one in. Pothast hit his second goal in the 63
rd, and Bill Cooney wrapped up the 3-0 Sockers' victory in the 70
th.
After a day-one tie, the defending National League champions, Albion White (CA-S), were looking for a positive result in today's contest against Lake Grove United (E-NY) in the Under-16 Boys blue division. A 5th minute Ariel Lassiter goal set Albion in the right direction with the 1-0 lead. Teammates Oscar Ortega and Noah Bunton added to the Albion lead with 15th and 24th minute goals. The 3-0 Albion advantage remained until the final whistle blew.
Under-17 Boys
In the Under-17 Boys red division, Commack SC United (E-NY) notched a day-two victory over returning National League team
Penn Fusion Celtics (E-PA). Samuel Durkot came out with a 10
th minute goal, and then teammate and Region I ODP player Sean Sepe followed up in the 11
th. The 2-0 result remained through the end of regulation.
Lou Fusz Gold Popovic (MO) and
Grand Rapids Crew Juniors (MI) last met in the 2010 Region II Championship semifinals in a game that was decided by PKs where Grand Rapids advanced to the finals capturing the title of 2010 Region II Champion. As familiar foes, the teams came out looking for an opportunity to gain the upper hand, but it wasn't until the 87
th minute that Robert O'Keefe found the Lou Fusz goal and the eventual game-winner. The 1-0 score remained for Lou Fusz to top the defending National League Champions, Grand Rapids.
TSC 94 Black (OK) was looking to slate a second win in league play as they met
Waza FC 94 Black (MI) in the Under-17 Boys blue division, but Waza, a team entering their third season in the league, kicked off the game with another idea in mind as they went up 1-0 with a 9
th minute Joey Serra goal. It was not until the 70
th minute that Jasen Kingsley found the TSC equalizer. As the game looked to end in a tie, Anson Crouch hit the game-winner for TSC just minutes before the clock ran out for the 2-1 TSC win.
National League action continues Saturday, Nov. 20, at Wilson Gillette Soccer Complex with games at 10 a.m., Noon and 2 and 4 p.m. For complete standings, scores and schedules,
