Massachusetts' Ed Celli honored at Awards Gala

Louisville, Ky. (Feb. 25, 2011) – The 2010 US Youth Soccer Young Referee of the Year award recipient was announced tonight at the US Youth Soccer Awards Gala, held in conjunction with the 2011 US Youth Soccer Workshop at the Marriott Downtown Louisville. The national US Youth Soccer TOPSoccer Buddy of the Year award winner is Ed Celli, of Wilmington, Mass.

Hilary Kennedy, host of The US Youth Soccer Show on Fox Soccer Channel, set the stage for the night as the master of ceremonies for the more than 1,000 in attendance.Boys and Girls Recreation and Competitive Coaches of the Year, Administrator of the Year, Volunteer of the Year, Goal and Save of the Year, Male and Female Young Referees of the Year and the Dr. Thomas Fleck Award were also presented during the Gala and the US Youth Soccer Hall of Fame inductees were honored as well.

Fifteen years ago, when Ed Celli's children exited the youth soccer scene, he still had the desire to coach. Celli found his outlet when he came across US Youth Soccer TOPSoccer (The Outreach Program for Soccer). He pitched the idea to the Wilmington Youth Soccer board of directors, and since the approval, Celli has been the ultimate Buddy forming a program that has flourished to include more than 93 players and 100 volunteer coaches. He has a special gift of understanding and communicating that adds value for his players.

The recipient of the TOPSoccer Buddy of the Year award is selected by the US Youth Soccer Board of Directors on the basis of his or her demonstration of patience, understanding, dependability, flexibility and the ability to adjust to ever-changing on-field situations. The Buddy of the Year is an invaluable volunteer who facilitates the program by filling many roles, including being a coach, cheerleader and role model as well as assisting when needed with administrative responsibilities. Other important qualities of the buddy are engaging players one-on-one, modeling desired behavior and being cognizant of player safety. Buddies assist, guide, direct and teach the game of soccer and its skills while creating a fun learning experience.
