New York West's Charlotte Falletta and Eastern Pennsylvania's Kyle Smith honored at Awards Gala

Boston (Feb. 17, 2012) – The recipients of the 2011 US Youth Soccer Young Referee of the Year award were announced tonight at the US Youth Soccer Awards Gala, held in conjunction with the 2012 US Youth Soccer Workshop in Boston. The national US Youth Soccer Young Referee of the Year award winners are Charlotte Falletta of Williamsville, N.Y., and Kyle Smith of Ephrata, Pa.

Hilary Kennedy, host of The US Youth Soccer Show on Fox Soccer, set the stage for the night as the master of ceremonies for the more than 1,000 in attendance. Boys and Girls Recreation and Competitive Coaches of the Year, Volunteer of the Year, Administrator of the Year, Goal and Save of the Year, TOPSoccer Buddy of the Year and the Dr. Thomas Fleck Award were also presented during the Gala and the US Youth Soccer Hall of Fame inductees were honored as well.
Since registering as a referee in 2008, Charlotte Falletta has continuously tried to improve her abilities to manage the game she loves. As a means to improve her skills, she keeps a list of referee-related questions to which she adds after every match. Whenever given the chance, Falletta will discuss her questions with more experienced referees. Her hard work, dedication and willingness to learn has helped Falletta develop into a standout referee.

Kyle Smith comes from a family of referees, propelling him to improve his skills as a referee in his own right. A Grade 8 referee since 2008, Smith has earned the right to take the field in some of the most prestigious events in the area. Smith worked the US Youth Soccer Olympic Development Program Region I Championships in 2011 and took the field as center in the Under-12 final at the US Youth Soccer Region I Championships.

Recipients of the Young Referee of the Year awards are selected by the US Youth Soccer Board of Directors based on their strong work ethic, knowledge of the rules of the game and service as positive role models.
