BARBOURSVILLE, W.Va. (July 4, 2009) – The second day of preliminary matches has concluded for the US Youth Soccer Region I Championships at Barboursville Soccer Complex, Huntington YMCA Kennedy Center and Scott Orthopedics Soccer Complex in the Village of Barboursville, W. Va. Many teams have secured their spot in Monday's semifinals, but others have to prove themselves tomorrow for the chance to advance.

After scoreless first half, Janice Johnson put Virginia's Under-17 Girls Vista Shockwave on the map with a goal in the 63rd minute. In the final minutes, Jaszmine Reeves was able to catch a piece of the ball and it was just enough for the second goal. The shockwave had to win today's match against their toughest opponent in the bracket Connecticut's CFC United to move up in the standings. They won 2-0.

At the half, the Under-17 Girls Far Post Soccer Club (VT) were up by one, thanks to two goals by Brittany Pfaff. In the second half, Albertson 91 Fury (E-NY) tied the match in the 48th minute after Jennifer Gibbons found the back of the net. Katherine Greer got the game winner in the 63rd minute. Albertson won 3-2.

In the first minute of the Under-17 Girls match of FC Stars of Massachusetts versus Odyssey Sport 97 (ME), Siobhan Devoy sent one past the keeper putting the Stars in an early lead. Later in the half, Rebecca Raymond scored in the 31st minute. For the 3-0 win, Devoy scored her second goal of the game in the 74th minute.

Rhode Island's Rays Sting won 2-0 over the Empire United-Buffalo (NY-W). Alex Gallogly scored in the 4th minute. Adding cushion to the Rays' lead, Chiara Comolli scored the game winner in the 26th minute.

Under-16 Boys Synergy United (VT) played a spirited match against the Pittsgrove Premier (NJ). Pittsgrove came out strong and had the Synergy on their heels. Despite the pressure, Synergy's Keagan McDonnell was able to gain possession and scored in the 22nd minute. The Synergy's keeper held strong but they weren't able to relax until Elia Louis scored off a volley in the 78th minute. The Synergy won their first two matches and are poised to claim a spot in Monday's semifinals.

The Hicksville Strikers (E-NY) beat New York West's CNY United FC Elite, 6-0. Colin Heffron scored the first goal of the match in 25th minute. In the second half, Matthew Slotnick put the Strikers up by two in the 46th minute and Timothy Parker scored another in the 48th minute. Late in the game Johnnie Maleganos, Heffron and Sean DeVito brought the score to 6-0.

The Under-16 Boys West Hartford Premier (CT) won their match against the Baltimore Bays (MD) with two goals in the first 12 minutes. Blake Mercer scored the first in the 6th minute. Quickly putting his team up by two, Andre Brueckner scored in the 12th minute. Hartford held their lead for a 2-0 win.

With two goals by Andrew Jordan and another two by John Frederick, Spirit United Coppa won their Under-16 Boys match over West Virginia's Epic Blast. Both teams fought hard for the full match, but Coppa was able to maintain control for much of the match.
