It's Wonderful to Win, But...

October 3, 2010 10:00 PM

While the majority of the article, It's wonderful to win, but… by Mike Woitalla of Soccer America seems to address a flaw in coaching, it would be a mistake not to address why it benefits the parents. Woitalla recalls a decision he made as the coach of a team of 9-year-old girls while trying to win a soccer game. Had Woitalla not interfered with the girls' communication and teamwork, the situation could've strengthened a player's confidence and skill. All too often adults focus on winning when instead they need to be honing the skills and techniques of young players. If adults stop keeping score the children will naturally build on the tools they need as they progress.

The US Youth Soccer Coaching Education Department, in cooperation with the Coaching and Recreational Committees, created the Positive Parenting DVD, a 'View from the Sidelines'. The department developed a teaching tool designed for administrators, coaches, parents and anyone who cares about children to assist them in providing a positive learning atmosphere for our children. The DVD assists adults in helping young players play and keeping the fun in youth sports. Get your copy today at the US Youth Soccer Online Store!
