USA Deaf Soccer names coaches

December 31, 2003 09:00 PM
USA Deaf Soccer Association (USADSA) named Peter Cornell as head coach and Kyle Cornell as assistant coach for the Men's USA Deaf National soccer team bound for Australia 2005.

The USADSA also announced tryouts for both men and women national teams to be conducted May 31-June 2 at Yankton Trails Park in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.

Coaches from across the nation submitted their soccer resumes to USADSA where a careful screening process during the past month by the USADSA's coaching committee took place. The Cornell’s proved that they share the same vision as the USADSA of an increased level of competitive performance by the deaf soccer athletes.

Peter Cornell has coached and was involved in the administrative end of the sport for more than 27 years on various levels including recreational, select and US Youth Soccer’s Olympic Development Program. His teams have played in seven SNICKERSÒ US Youth Soccer State Association championship finals, winning three times and advancing to compete in SNICKERSÒ US Youth Soccer Region IV Championships (Far West Regionals).

He has coached such famous players as U.S. Men’s National Team goalkeeper Kasey Keller, who is currently competing for the #1 spot on the World Cup team.

Kyle Cornell, who has also coached at various levels, has taken three teams to State Association quarterfinals. He also coached Washington State Youth Soccer Association ODP at the district level, and currently serves as US Youth Soccer’s Region III Marketing Coordinator.

Both Peter and Kyle have coached deaf soccer players previously and share the experience that deaf soccer athletes' inability to hear was never an issue in their coaching career. The Cornells’ coaching history will bring experience, knowledge and the passion needed to run the program for the Men's USA Deaf National Soccer Team.

The men’s USA Team finished tenth in the world in Rome, Italy, last July beating the gold medallist and host Italy 2-1. The women’s team finished first in Belgium last April maintaining an undefeated record.
