US Youth Soccer recently announced the new Official US Youth Soccer Coaching Manual. This new resource is an indispensable tool for anyone coaching youth players, and is only available through US Youth Soccer. The list of authors for the new book reads like a who’s who list of youth soccer specialists. Written by five of the nation’s leading authorities on youth soccer development and education - Dr. Thomas Fleck, Dr. Ronald Quinn, Dr. David Carr, Virgil Stringfield, and William Buren - the Official US Youth Soccer Coaching Manual contains a gold mine of information for novice as well as experienced youth coaches.
The new manual uses an educational and sport science foundation rather than a simple collection of drills to allow the youth coach a better understanding of the player. A few of the topics covered include: The Art of Coaching; Learning Through Game Activities; Characteristics of Effective Coaching; Successful Player Development; Tactical Awareness and Team Concepts; Correcting Technique; and Competition and Player Development.
Dr. Fleck, the Director of Coaching and Player Development for Idaho Youth Soccer Association and a senior member of the U.S. Soccer Federation (USSF) National Coaching Staff, holds a doctorate in education from Lehigh University and is a certified elementary education instructor. He is also known for co-authoring the US Youth Soccer Parent/Coach Series, an age-appropriate series of coaching booklets.
Dr. Quinn holds the position of Associate Professor, Director of Health, Physical Education and Sports Studies, and Head Women’s Soccer Coach at Xavier University. Dr. Quinn, who authored The Peak Performance: Soccer Games for Player Development, is also a member of the US Youth Soccer Coaching Committee and the USSF National Teaching Staff.
With more than 40 years of involvement with soccer as a player, coach, administrator, and educator, Dr. Carr is currently the Coordinator of Physical Education and Sports Sciences at Ohio University and is also a member of the USSF National Teaching Staff. The two-time National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Regional Coach of the Year is a co-author of the National Youth Coaching License program.
Stringfield is a U.S. Soccer National Staff Coach and holds a USSF National "A" License. He has served as the Director of Coaching for both Arizona Youth Soccer Association and Arkansas State Soccer Association. Buren served as a technical advisor for FIFA World Cup USA 94TM, and also serves as a U.S. Soccer National Staff Coach with a USSF National "A" License.
The new manual, which is presented by SNICKERS, debuted at the recent 2003 US Youth Soccer adidas Workshop and Coaches Convention.
