Peri Marosevic (Rockford, IL) scored his fifth goal in five consecutive games, and Demetrius Omphroy (Alameda, CA) notched his first, and the game winner to earn the All Stars a well deserved fourth consecutive victory against a team of ’87 and ‘88 KV Mechelen players. In an ill-tempered game, Marosevic latched onto a cross from Raphael Martinez to slot home the first goal of the game for the All Stars in the 28th minute.
In the second half, Mechelen came out with a very determined effort, resulting in a tying goal from a series of passes from the defense, to the midfield, to their streaking striker who finished brilliantly to bring the home crowd to their feet.
The rest of the half was a seesaw affair with both teams missing goal-scoring chances.
Cesar Nunez (Gurmee, IL) seemingly broke the tie in the 80th minute when he finished a series of passes in the penalty area, only to have the referee blow the whistle for off sides. Both teams continued to battle until, with a minute to play, Dimi Omphrog scored unassisted to give the All Stars a deserved 4th straight win.
Coach Tim O’Sullivan was very pleased with how the boys fought through some difficult conditions to earn their victory on the last day of the tour.
“Our boys overcame some difficult conditions to find a way to earn the win,” said O’Sullivan. “I’m happy with Demitri, who at times showed flashes of brilliance, to come through with the game winner on his 15th birthday. Lucas Swertloff again played very well, and our persistence was rewarded with a game winner in extra time to finish a great tour and great experiences for these boys.”
The US Youth Soccer ODP Boys adidas ‘89 All Stars ended their European tour with a 4-1-1 record.
