US Youth Soccer ODP a Common Thread at U.S. Soccer Under-14 and Under-15 National Team Camps

July 27, 2004 10:00 PM

RICHARDSON, Texas (July 28, 2004) - Next week boys from across the country will attend the U.S. Soccer Under-14 and Under-15 National Team Camps.  Although the boys are from various backgrounds and state affiliations, they all share participation in the US Youth Soccer Olympic Development Program, commonly referred to as US Youth Soccer ODP.

Over 180 of the 200 players (120 at Under-14 and 80 at Under-15) invited to the U.S. Soccer Under-14 and Under-15 National Team training camps compete in the US Youth Soccer Olympic Development Program with the majority attending US Youth Soccer ODP Regional Camps.  With the exception of a few remaining spots, the entire camp is made up of US Youth Soccer ODP players.

The Under-14 boys camp will be held at Middlesex Prep School in Concord, Mass. from August 1-7 while the Under-15 boys camp, also from August 1-7, will be held at the Home Depot National Training Center in Carson, Ca.

"We are proud of these young men and the potential they hold," said David Messersmith, president of US Youth Soccer.  "The opportunity to continue their development and training will benefit the future of soccer in America."

The seven-day training camp, which begins Sunday, will help U14 Boys Technical Director Manny Schellscheidt to introduce the boys to the rigors of future international competition and Under-15 National Team Head Coach Jim Barlow uses the camp to prepare players for the next step in international soccer.  At the camp, players receive instruction and play games for a week, while being watched, evaluated and directed by U.S. Soccer's National Staff coaches, U.S. Soccer coaches and other regional and state coaches.

Listed below are the players selected to attend the Under-14 National Team Training Camp that also participate in US Youth Soccer ODP.  Additional players to be named later this week.

The US Youth Soccer Olympic Development Program was formed in 1977 to identify a pool of players in each age group from which a National Team will be selected for international competition; to provide high-level training to benefit and enhance the development of players at all levels; and, through the use of carefully selected and licensed coaches, develop a mechanism for the exchange of ideas and curriculum to improve all levels of coaching.  Players are selected, in most states, on the basis of open tryouts. Some state associations combine scouting techniques and invitations to certain players with the open tryouts.

US Youth Soccer ODP is the first and original ODP program. US Youth Soccer ODP is the only elite player development program that can claim members of Major League Soccer and Women's United Soccer Association, as well as a majority of current and past national and youth team members, as alumni.  And, with programs in all 55 State Associations as well as regional and national championships and participation in international tournaments, US Youth Soccer ODP continues to lead the way for elite player development in the United States.
