Midwest Region Takes 10 Titles at US Youth Soccer National League Director’s Cup, presented by adidas

December 31, 2003 09:00 PM
LAWRENCE, Indiana (August 1, 2004) – Teams from US Youth Soccer's Midwest Region departed the US Youth Soccer National League Director's Cup with ten titles in various boys and girls age groups.
Leading the way for the Midwest Region were teams from the host state of Indiana with five Director's Cup Championships and three teams finishing as runners-up.
Lawrence Mayor Deborah Cantwell witnessed some of the championship play and assisted in awarding championship medals to several of the teams.  ""We are very proud of these athletes and their dedication to soccer,"" said Cantwell.  ""Lawrence continues to provide first-class facilities for first-class events such as the US Youth Soccer National League Director's Cup, presented by adidas.
Congratulations to all who represent your state and region with such pride.""
Coming into today's play, 11 teams were undefeated.  At the conclusion of the day nine teams remained unbeaten and took home their respective championship cups.
In Under-14 Boys action, the Indy Burn (IN) went undefeated on the week with four wins and no losses.  Finishing an outstanding week with a hard victory over Team Boca (FL), Matthew Hedges (IN) hit what would be the game winner in the 55th minute to keep his team's goal of a Director's Cup Division I Championship in reach.
Also in Under-14 Boys play, the New Hampshire Stars (NH) looked to keep their undefeated streak alive with a Premier Division match-up with HUSA of Illinois.  At the end of regulation the score was tied at 0-0 with neither team allowing their opponent an advantage.  After two overtime periods the game would be decided by kicks from the mark.  Again neither team relented until the second round of kicks when HUSA took the lead and the match.
BRYC Attack (VA) Under-17 Girls played Medford Strikers (NJ) for the Premier Division Championship and like the Under-14 Boys match, extra time wasn't enough as both teams took shots from the mark to determine the champion.  BRYC stood victorious capitalizing on four shots while Medford fell just short with two.
Excel of WBL (MN) took on Westside Storm (NC) in the Under-15 Girls Division I Championship.  Excel's Katie Shelander scored the lone goal of the match in the 30th to give the only team from Minnesota their Director's Cup trophy.
In the Under-15 Boys Premier Division, great goal keeping continued to be the characteristic of the CUSC Cosmos (IN).  Zach Carr and Andy Pianko, goalkeepers for the Cosmos went into the final against Manhattan Thunder (E-NY) without allowing a single goal.  At the end of the day the keepers denied all shots on the tournament and helped their team to the championship.
The US Youth Soccer National League Director's Cup, presented by adidas, is the culminating event for the National Leagues operated during the summer, featuring top boys and girls teams in the Under-14 through Under-18 age groups.  Hosted by the Indiana Youth Soccer Association, the Director's Cup continues US Youth Soccer's commitment to developing young players, while helping to ensure the future success of the U.S. National team program.
