Nation’s Largest Youth Sport Organization Set to Launch Coaching Education Series

RICHARDSON, TEXAS (April 22, 2005) - Today US Youth Soccer announced the release of the first title in a series of instructional youth soccer DVDs, The Novice Coach: An Introduction to Coaching Youth Soccer.

With the release of “The Novice Coach,” US Youth Soccer furthers its commitment to fostering the mental and physical growth of its players and coaches. The Coaching Education Department, in conjunction with our Recreation and Coaching committees, are proud to provide a teaching tool to adults to assist them in providing positive learning environment for our children. “The Novice Coach” DVD will show all coaches, with varying levels of experience, how to appropriately facilitate a child’s soccer learning experience.

“Regardless of what coaching background you bring, The Novice Coach DVD from US Youth Soccer provides a tool to better assist a coach to grow the spirit without limiting the child,” said Sam Snow, director of coaching education for US Youth Soccer. “Even if you’ve coached players at a high-level this tool is designed to assist you in coaching the youngest players at the recreational level.”

The Novice Coach features over 45 minutes of actual training sessions and activities with specific steps to organizing and conduct training sessions for Under-6, Under-8 and Under-10 boys and girls. In addition to the DVD a downloadable companion book is also included.

“Developing these young athletes’ abilities is fundamental in how the game will continue to progress and more importantly instilling the passion and character building blocks for our future generations,” said David Messersmith, president of US Youth Soccer. “Our Coaching Education department as well as those on our recreation and coaching committees seek to promote the growth of the game in the United States and we must properly prepare coaches to encourage children to find the game within.”

The Novice Coach DVD will be available for individual and small group purchase through USYouthSoccer.org and through your State Association at $3.00 each. For a complete list of State Associations contact US Youth Soccer at 800.4SOCCER or online at USYouthSoccer.org.

“We are pleased to offer The Novice Coach at a substantially discounted introductory price to promote further education to those working with our youth players,” said Messersmith.

In an easy to follow layout, The Novice Coach provides first-time coaches and those who have little experience in coaching players under age 10 simple instructions in how to run a training session, establishing proper goals, game day overviews and more.

“Several club coaches have reviewed The Novice Coach DVD and see the value it brings to those who have or haven’t coached,” said Gary Williamson, director of coaching for North Texas State Soccer Association who leads several of training segments on The Novice Coach. “This DVD is fun and assists coaches to better understand the abilities of these younger players and how to instill that lifelong passion for the game.”
