Indianapolis, Indiana (September 7, 2006)
-- Governor Mitch Daniels met with several Indiana Youth Soccer players at the State House on Tuesday to designate September as Youth Soccer Month in Indiana. The proclamation kicks off a month of soccer activities as part of the fourth annual Youth Soccer Month - Celebrating Soccer
in America campaign, in cooperation with Indiana Youth Soccer and US Youth Soccer. Thus far, Indiana is the fourteenth state to achieve a statewide proclamation this year.
Governor Daniels spoke with eight youth player and referee representatives from across Indiana about the importance of striving for personal best on the soccer field and in the classroom. "Sports are a great way to learn about discipline and dedication…working hard, being on time to a game, part of the team," Daniels said, "and that there is always room for improvement."
With over 58,000 youth participants in 138 clubs across the state, Indiana Youth Soccer is pleased to help raise awareness about the impact soccer has on fitness, fun, family and friendship through the sport of soccer. Our commitment to Creating a Better Environment is made possible at the local level through the untiring efforts of parent volunteers, club leaders, coaches, and District Commissioners along with support from the Indiana Youth Soccer Board of Directors and state office.
Events during Youth Soccer Month highlight various programs available to children interested in soccer. Clubs and local governments work together to adopt similar proclamations across the state or hold their own Youth Soccer Month celebrations. Businesses like Kohl's and Burger King partner with US Youth Soccer to offer tournament and contest opportunities while colleges and MLS teams designate special Youth Soccer Month promotional nights.
