Week 2: Friendship

September 10, 2006 10:00 PM

Quality friendships are made on the field participating in this team sport. For that reason, “friendship” is one of the key messages of Youth Soccer Month, an annual celebration of the sport of soccer.

“Friends support you. They encourage you and cheer for you both on and of the field,” said Hilary McKenzie, a Youth Soccer Month clinic participant. “Some of my best friends are also on my soccer team. It is great because we get to spend so much time together and we have a lot in common.”

Soccer teaches players a lot about responsibility and being part of a team. Practicing and competing together gives teammates an excellent bond. This bond often leads to close friendships beyond the field.

Recognizing the impact and importance the sport of soccer plays in the day-to-day lives of America’s families, US Youth Soccer, with 3.2 million members, the nation’s largest youth sports association, is spearheading the fourth Youth Soccer Month – Celebrating Soccer in America, this September.

Throughout Youth Soccer Month a series of messages and themes will be communicated to illustrate the essence of youth soccer. Each week during Youth Soccer Month a different message will be the focus of “Celebrating Soccer in America.”

The four messages of Youth Soccer month are:

Fitness: (Week of September 4)
The health and fitness (physical, psychological and social) benefits of playing soccer.
Fun: (Week of September 11)
Whether recreational or competitive in nature, involvement in soccer is easy, affordable and rewarding.
Family: (Week of September 18)
Playing soccer ties families together as schedules, vacations and family time are coordinated.
Friendship: (Week of September 25)
The relationships generated through playing soccer extend beyond the field.

Youth Soccer Month will also highlight the various programs available to children interested in participating in soccer, including the inner-city, special needs, recreational and elite soccer programs that have facilitated the growth of the sport at all levels.
