US Youth Soccer, the nation's largest youth sports association, today announced the sixth annual Youth Soccer Month – Celebrating Soccer in America this September and several events highlighting the celebration.
"We [US Youth Soccer] take great pride in spearheading the Youth Soccer Month initiative to further promote the benefits of fun, family, friendship and fitness associated in playing this wonderful sport," said Larry Monaco, president of US Youth Soccer. "Soccer continues to grow with more children in the United States participating in organized soccer than any other sport. This celebration furthers US Youth Soccer's mission to foster the physical, mental and emotional growth and development of America's youth through the sport of soccer at all levels of age and competition."
Throughout Youth Soccer Month a series of messages and themes will be communicated to illustrate the essence of youth soccer. Each week during Youth Soccer Month a different key will be the focus of "Celebrating Soccer in America."
The four messages of Youth Soccer month are:
· Fun: (Week of September 1)
Whether recreational or competitive in nature, involvement in soccer is easy, affordable and rewarding.
· Family: (Week of September 8)
Playing soccer ties families together as schedules, vacations and family time are coordinated.
· Friendship: (Week of September 15)
The relationships generated through playing soccer extend beyond the field.
· Fitness: (Week of September 22)
The health and fitness (physical, psychological and social) benefits of playing soccer.
Youth Soccer Month 2008 includes working with local leadership to organize grassroots public affairs campaigns, numerous local events and media relations initiatives.
There are currently 150 college events scheduled as well as events slated with Major League Soccer, where US Youth Soccer serves as official grassroots partner to the league. The first college events began Friday, August 29, with Creighton University women and men. For a complete list of events, visit the website and check back as new events are continuing to be added. US Youth Soccer is kicking off the Youth Soccer Month Giant Jersey Tour today at the Atlanta Cup. A Youth Soccer Month branded SUV will be touring events across America to share the excitement and promote the benefits of soccer. A life-size Stickley, the US Youth Soccer mascot, will be traveling on the SUV to take pictures with fans and at major landmarks along the tour's route. In addition to promoting the benefits of youth soccer, the tour will promote the Passback Program.
US Youth Soccer is partnering with the U.S. Soccer Foundation's Passback Program to collect gently used soccer equipment, specifically cleats. The Foundation plans on setting the World Record for the Longest Chain of Shoes and will have all of the shoes collected throughout the year on display at the National Soccer Coaches Association of America convention in January. The current record stands at 10,500 shoes.  If you would like more information on giving to Passback or to organize a shoe drive, click here.
Since its inception, state and local government officials have officially proclaimed September as Youth Soccer Month to further the awareness and benefits of youth soccer. Utah leads the celebration by achieving a renewing proclamation naming September as Youth Soccer Month. Click here for a map of states who have proclaimed.
Youth Soccer Month is a celebration for all of those who participate in soccer. The celebration highlights the various programs available to children interested in participating in soccer, including the inner-city, special needs, recreational and elite soccer programs that have facilitated the growth of the sport at all levels.
