US Youth Soccer Volunteer of the Year Named

Tennessee's Sara Kluttz honored at Awards Gala

SAN JOSE, Calif. (Friday, March 6, 2009) -
The recipient of the 2008 US Youth Soccer Volunteer of the Year award was announced tonight at the US Youth Soccer Awards Gala, held in conjunction with the 2009 US Youth Soccer adidas Workshop at the San Jose McEnery Convention Center. The national Volunteer of the Year award winner is Sara Kluttz of Ooltewah, Tenn.

Hilary Kennedy, host of The US Youth Soccer Show on Fox Soccer Channel, set the stage for the night as the master of ceremonies for the more than 1,000 in attendance. Competitive and Recreation Coach of the Year, Administrator of the Year, Goal and Save of the Year, Male and Female Young Referee of the Year and the Dr. Thomas Fleck Award were also presented during the Gala and the US Youth Soccer Hall of Fame inductees were honored as well.

Sara Kluttz has been active in soccer since she began playing at the age of five in Chattanooga, Tenn. Her calling to give back to the game came a little over two years ago when she was on her way to a summer soccer camp and noticed how many kids were without anything to do during the summer. Her answer was to create a soccer camp to involve them. The first year she had 60 participants and the second summer, she reached of 250 kids while expanding the camp to accommodate as many kids as possible, regardless of transportation and equipment needs. Each year, Kluttz recruits more volunteers and reaches more kids and she plans to continue the camp as she continues her soccer career at Austin Peay University.

The recipient of the Volunteer of the Year award was selected by the US Youth Soccer Board of Directors and is honored as a positive role model who promotes the game and increases the opportunities to participate.
