Florida State University defender Ella Stephen continues to climb the ladder in her soccer career as she was named the NSCAA Women's National Player of the Week for Oct. 28. Stephen began playing club soccer for Space Coast United in her hometown of Indian Harbour Beach, Fla., before competing with the Florida US Youth Soccer Olympic Development Program (US Youth Soccer ODP). In 2004, she was invited to participate with the US Youth Soccer Region III ODP team, and, after spending two years with the regional team, was called up to the U.S. Under-17 National Team. Stephen has continued to be named to several U.S. Soccer National Team pools, and she is currently helping her fourth ranked Florida State Seminoles in pursuit of an ACC championship and a birth to the NCAA tournament.
Stephan led Florida State to a perfect weekend, recording a pair of victories at home over No. 2 North Carolina and North Carolina State. She recorded the game-winner against North Carolina, scoring on a header off a corner with only 12 seconds remaining in double overtime as the Seminoles defeated the Tar Heels, 3-2, for only the second time in school history and first since 2000. Stephan out-jumped the competition on the far post and found the back of the net from short distance for her second goal of the season and first career game-winner. She also was part of the Seminole backline that held the Tar Heels without a shot in both overtime periods. In a 2-0 win Sunday against North Carolina State, Stephan and the Seminole defense held the Wolfpack to just three shots while not allowing a shot in the second half. With two victories last week, FSU is in sole possession of first place in the ACC with 19 points.
