Nick May parlayed a trip with the Florida US Youth Soccer Olympic Development Program (US Youth Soccer ODP) into a spot with the youth academy at Argentine club, Estudiantes.
The senior-to-be was playing with the Florida US Youth Soccer ODP team last summer when a coach asked if any of the players would be interested in a trip to Argentina to train with a professional club. May talked to the coach and was set up on a trial with one of the most powerful clubs in South America, and winners of the 2009 Copa Libertadores (the South American Champions League), Estudiantes.
May spent a couple weeks training in Argentina and the coaches were so impressed they left him with an open invitation to return. May went back for four weeks this year and was offered a spot in the club's youth academy where he will spend his senior year of high school in hopes of landing a professional contract.
May has caught the eye of other scouts as he was sent on trial with Queens Park Rangers of the English Championship division. May traveled to London for a trial with the club where he earned a start with the youth team against rival Crystal Palace and also spent time with the first team.
May's performance in England impressed Queens Park, but attaining a student visa to join the youth academy can be difficult, so he will join Estudiantes this fall. South America has become a hotbed for European scouts and May will have a chance to break into the first team at Estudiantes as well as gain interest from other European clubs.
