Long-time educator announces retirement

Dr. John 'JT' Thomas, assistant director of coaching for US Youth Soccer, recently announced his retirement from his post at US Youth Soccer effective Aug. 31.

After five productive years with US Youth Soccer and 23 years in the military, United States Navy (retired), JT plans to stay closer to home and his family.

As assistant director of coaching education, JT served as a leader and liaison to US Youth Soccer State Association directors of coaching and furthered the educational efforts of thousands.

"JT has been a great asset to the coaching department of US Youth Soccer, with his departure, he will be missed by me as a professional and a friend," said Sam Snow, director of coaching education for US Youth Soccer. "JT has left an impact in the youth game and the coaching community. There are countless youth who can attest to his efforts to make the game a better place to play."

In addition to spending more time with his family, JT plans to return to teaching in the collegiate environment and to coaching local youth teams.

"I would like to thank the US Youth Soccer staff for all they do for soccer but especially Sam Snow for providing me with the guidance and opportunities to assist him in leading the educational and coaching development of the largest youth soccer organization in the United States," said JT. "See you all on the fields."

Before joining US Youth Soccer, JT was the head coach at San Diego Mesa College, a regional coordinator of coaching education for the California Youth Soccer Association – South, and the director of coaching education for the San Diego Crusader Soccer Club. He holds the United States Soccer Federation "A" License and National Youth License. His other accolades include playing at the collegiate (Frostburg State) and professional (San Antonio Heat) levels, as well as coaching semi-professional and professional teams.

Thomas received his doctorate of Business Management from Madison University in 2004.
