2011 US Youth Soccer ODP Boys Thanksgiving Interregional games continue with 1997 and 1998 age groups

– Games continue with the 1997 and 1998 age groups competing at the US Youth Soccer Olympic Development Program (US Youth Soccer ODP) Boys Thanksgiving Interregional at the Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista, Calif.

The 1997s got underway Saturday with Region IV shutting out Region II 2-0. Dylan Smith ran onto a driven pass from Samad Bounthong in the 30th minute and finished for the 1-0 lead going into the break. Eight minutes after the restart Ether Bustos grabbed the insurance goal as the Region IV defense held on for the shutout.
Region III also got off to a hot start beating Region I 3-1.

Region III also got off to a hot start beating Region I 3-1. Brandon Millington struck first for Region III, but Region I's Justin Torres equalized coming out of halftime. José Cerra put Region III ahead for good in the 52nd and Tobin Howell added a cushion seven minutes later to close out the game.


After both squads fell to the U.S. National Team sides yesterday, Region III defeated Region I 3-1 to grab their first victory of the weekend. Juan Ortiz gave Region III the early lead with a goal in the 5th minute, but Brian Navarrete leveled in the 29th for Region I. Region III broke the game open just before halftime with goals by Alexander Dexter in the 37th and Jack Skahan in the 39th and defenses prevailed in the second half as neither team found net again.

The U.S. National Team Blue squad defeated Region IV 4-1 for their second straight win. Sean Teixeira grabbed the early lead for the U.S. in the 8th minute, but William Eslinger pulled Region IV even just five minutes later. Christian Pulisic and Javier Cortez put the U.S. back on top with goals a minute apart before halftime, and Teixeira notched his second of the game in the 66th to give the National Team the victory.

Lagos Kunga, Elijah Rice and Joe Gallardo each scored for the second straight day as the U.S. National Team Red beat Region II 5-1. Kunga put the U.S. in the lead seven minutes in and Rice made it a two goal game in the 20th. Gallardo scored the third just after halftime before Antonio Sanchez put Region II on the board in the 51st. The U.S. responded when Logan Panchot and Eric Calvillo put the game out of reach with back-to-back goals to finish the scoring in the 58th.
