INDIANAPOLIS (Jan. 18, 2013) — The 2013 class of the US Youth Soccer Hall of Fame was announced this evening at the US Youth Soccer Awards Gala, held in conjunction with the 2013 US Youth Soccer Workshop at the Indianapolis Convention Center. Two integral members of the soccer community were honored: David Messersmith and Lawrence Monaco.

 

Hilary Kennedy, host of The US Youth Soccer Show on Fox Soccer, set the stage for the night as the master of ceremonies for the more than 1,000 in attendance. Boys and Girls Recreation and Competitive Coaches of the Year, Young Referee of the Year, Volunteer of the Year, Goal and Save of the Year, TOPSoccer Buddy of the Year and the Dr. Thomas Fleck Award were also presented during the Gala.

 

The Hall of Fame was established in 2007 with founder and first chairman of US Youth Soccer, Donald Greer, as the charter member.

 

For more than 20 years, David Messersmith has dedicated himself to the development of youth soccer. His commitment and service has been diverse and extensive, and it culminated in his election and service as President of US Youth Soccer from 2000 to 2006. Larry Monaco became actively involved in soccer in 1970, when he established "Soccer on the Hill," the first Washington, D.C. youth soccer league. More than 40 years later, Monaco has a record full of service and positions held to further the advancement of youth soccer.
