US Youth Soccer Hall of Fame member and leader Mavis Derflinger passes away

Mavis Derflinger, a 2009 US Youth Soccer Hall of Fame inductee, passed away yesterday.

Derflinger began her soccer career coaching a girls' team in Lee, N.Y., in 1969. In the 1970s, Derflinger teamed with Rael Vodicka to form the Washington Area Girls Soccer League (WAGS) where she served as treasurer.

Derflinger was elected the president of the Virginia Youth Soccer Association from 1979-1981. She also held the position of Region I director for US Youth Soccer from 1981-1986.

In the early 1980s, she became the first female board member of the USSF. In 1986, she was elected as chairwoman of US Youth Soccer, which put her on the USSF Executive Committee. She served as chairwoman through 1990.

Derflinger fought tirelessly for the U.S. Women's program funding. Among her many achievements, Derflinger's efforts were pivotal in securing initial funding for the creation of the U.S. Under-19 Women's National Team in the early 1990s.

In 1994 Derflinger, along with Betty D'Anjolell, took the first women's national team to travel outside the United States. The team played in Iceland, Germany, Norway and Holland. Derflinger served as head of delegation for the team when they played in Italy and Bulgaria as well.

USSF voted her a life member in 1990. She is a Virginia DC Soccer Hall of Fame member as well.

In 1995, she received the Sporting Goods Manufacturers of America's National Heroes Award for her dedication to soccer in the local community.

In 2004, Derflinger was inducted into the CONCACAF Hall of Fame. In 2009, she was inducted into the US Youth Soccer Region I Hall of Fame. Derflinger also served on the US Youth Soccer Hall of Fame Committee.
