Players of the Month | November 2013

Each month, US Youth Soccer will be recognizing one male and one female player whose accomplishments on and off the field stick out among the rest. The players who are selected will represent a balance of athletic achievement, sportsmanship and citizenship.
Examples of these athletes' characteristics include:
- Impactful or notable in-game performance
- Displays good sportsmanship and the promotion of teamwork
- Community service
- Superior academic achievement
- Overcoming personal obstacles
While great performances in the game of soccer are appreciated, it's important to note that accomplishments off the field are valued just as much as those achieved on the field.
This month's honorees are...

Female Player of the Month

Maya from Rochester, Minn.

On the soccer field, Maya always tries her best to make an impact in the game and is always a positive role model as a teammate. She plays soccer because she loves the game and being part of a team, and it shows through her huge smile. Off the field, Maya continues to be a positive role model for those around her by giving back. In April, Maya's grandma was diagnosed with Stage 4 kidney cancer. Maya, who loves to play four-square, decided to plan a four-square tournament in order to raise money for her grandma. On Aug. 23, the tournament took place and more than 65 people were in attendance to support the fundraiser. In the end, Maya's tournament raised more than $1,000 for her grandma.

Male Player of the Month

Eddie from Bel Air, Md.

Eddie began playing soccer at age 5 and has now been playing travel soccer for four years. He displays speed and good ball skills, as well as a solid knowledge of the game and the ability to work well with his club team. He also plays on the US Youth Soccer ODP Maryland state team and has competed in several regional ODP tournaments. Eddie has overcome many obstacles, including five surgeries for a cleft lip and palate that he was born with. He had to overcome some self-esteem issues caused by the scars, and soccer helped give him confidence. Eddie has done well to put it behind him and continues to get straight As in school while being a kind and funny person who is looked up to by his friends and coaches.
