Players of the Month | September 2013

Each month, US Youth Soccer will be recognizing one male and one female player whose accomplishments on and off the field stick out among the rest. The players who are selected will represent a balance of athletic achievement, sportsmanship and citizenship.
Examples of these athletes' characteristics include:
- Impactful or notable in-game performance
- Displays good sportsmanship and the promotion of teamwork
- Community service
- Superior academic achievement
- Overcoming personal obstacles
While great performances in the game of soccer are appreciated, it's important to note that accomplishments off the field are valued just as much as those achieved on the field.
This month's honorees are...

Female Player of the Month

Zoe from Naperville, Ill.
Zoe recently scored both goals in Team Chicago Academy-Botafogo’s 2-1 win over defending champions VSA Heat in the Under-18 final at the 2013 US Youth Soccer National Championships. Her three total goals were tied for most in the age group, despite missing nearly two full games after arriving late from taking mandatory summer classes at the University of Kentucky — where she’ll start her freshman season this fall. Zoe was also the top scorer in the US Youth Soccer National League among U-18 Girls, as she recorded eight goals to help her side finish 7-0-0 — just the seventh perfect record in league history. She also scored both goals in her high school state championship game to give her school its second straight state title.

Male Player of the Month

Steven from St. Martinville, La.

Steven is a striker who possesses speed and size, as well as a passion for the game of soccer. His determination to improve helped him score 37 goals last season, and he also works hard to get his teammates involved in every aspect of the game. Steven is active off the field in school and his church. He’s been an Altar Server since he was 8, and he’s also recorded straight A’s in every grade level so far and achieved the highest overall average on the SATs. He combined his academic and athletic endeavors to write a poem about soccer that placed second in the Louisiana Youth Author’s Writing Contest and was later published in the 2011 Louisiana Young Author’s Directory.
