US Youth Soccer TOPSoccer (The Outreach Program for Soccer) is a community-based training and team placement program for young athletes with disabilities, organized by youth soccer association volunteers. The program is designed to bring the opportunity of learning and playing soccer to any boy or girl, age 4-19, who has a mental or physical disability. The goal is to enable the thousands of young athletes with disabilities to become valued and successful members of the US Youth Soccer family.
US Youth Soccer TOPSoccer has the same core elements as standard soccer, including the spirit of team sports and strenuous physical activity. But it can also be modified to accommodate the special needs of the players. Participants are placed on teams depending on their needs and abilities, not age. The emphasis is on developing positive self-concepts and having fun, rather than only on winning or losing.
The results are dramatic. Parents of kids with disabilities are amazed at the positive impact playing soccer has on their children's self-esteem. Many also seem to improve their motor skills. Quite possibly the most significant product is that for many of these children, as a result of playing TOPSoccer, for the first time, they enjoy the camaraderie of team sports and hear the cheers from proud parents, sisters and brothers on the sidelines.
