It's exciting to watch our children excel at the sports they love. Working hard toward a personal best or perfecting a specific technique are critical to success, but let’s also remember that playing multiple sports can be tremendously beneficial in the long run – and a lot of fun for our kids.
Branching out from just one sport offers youth athletes both physical and mental benefits, from enhancing current skills to learning to appreciate the new skills required by a different sport.
Liberty Mutual Insurance Responsible Sports sat down with FC Dallas and U.S. Soccer Men’s National Team standout Zach Loyd to get his thoughts on playing multiple sports.
In our exclusive TAKE 5 interview, Zach told us that growing up, he played not only soccer, but also baseball, basketball and football. In fact, Zach played basketball, football and soccer all through high school.
Zach said that this multi-sport approach ensured that he retained a fresh and exciting perspective on athletics.
“For me, it was refreshing to go from one sport to the next,” said Zach. “At a young age, I never really got burnt out on anything, so I was always excited for the next sport. I think that was good for me growing up.”
Zach also shared his story of how, when and why he decided to specialize in soccer in this exclusive interview.
“The biggest decision was, if I was going to go to college, I had to get a scholarship, and soccer was my best opportunity to do so,” said Zach. “Once I started getting schools contacting me about soccer, it was kind of an easy decision for me.”
Zach added that he still plays basketball in the offseason, as well as the somewhat lesser-known game of bocce. According to Zach, just about any sport provides excitement and challenges, along with a way to meet and connect with friends.
“I like the camaraderie of team sports,” said Zach. “I like doing something new on a regular basis.”
