FRISCO, Texas (May 13, 2013) – The US Youth Soccer Far West Regional League has redesigned the league structure for the upcoming 2013-2014 season to consist of three geographical divisions.  The Far West Regional League serves as the premier league competition for teams in the Under-13 through Under-18 age groups in Region IV and the restructured league format will better serve teams seeking meaningful and competitive league play.

US Youth Soccer is divided into four regions, Region I (East), Region II (Midwest), Region III (South) and Region IV (West) to assist in national competitions. The FarWest Regional Leauge is joined by the Region I Premier League, Region II Midwest Regional League and Region III Southern Premier League as the country’s top regional competitions, with successful teams from each Regional League qualifying into the prestigious US Youth Soccer National League.

Under the new format, the Far West Regional League will consist of three divisions; California League, Four Corners League and Northern League, to better accommodate the geographical size of the western region.  The new structure will provide teams a better format for meaningful and competitive games for individual and team development, as well as provide a platform for advancement to the US Youth Soccer Region IV Championships and the National League.

Breakdown of States in the New League Format:

California League: California North and California South

Four Corners League: Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico, Southern Nevada and Utah

Northern League: Alaska, Hawaii, Idaho, Montana, Northern Nevada, Oregon, Washington and Wyoming

"The new format of the US Youth Soccer Far West Regional League will help provide a more efficient league structure for the top teams in the western United States," says US Youth Soccer Region IV Director, Ken Edmunds.  "Teams are looking for a consistent calendar of meaningful and competitive games in a more practical travel schedule, and the opportunity for advancement to the US Youth Soccer Region IV Championships and the National League brings added incentive to ensure the competitiveness of the Far West Regional League."

Four teams from each age group will earn advancement to the annual Region IV Championships; the top two finishers in the California League, as well as the top team from each of the Northern and Four Corners Leagues.  The Region IV Championships is regional stage of the US Youth Soccer National Championship Series, the oldest and most prestigious youth soccer national championship competition in the country.  In the Under-13 through Under-17 age groups, two teams from the Far West Regional League will also earn a spot in the National League, which consists of the top 16 teams in the country, the following year.  Details on National League qualification are still to be determined.

Teams must apply to gain entry to the Far West Regional League divisions.  For more information on the application and league requirements, contact your State Association or US Youth Soccer Region IV at regionivsoccer@gmail.com.
