FRISCO, Texas (April 28, 2014) — The US Youth Soccer Southern Regional Premier League (SRPL) is pleased to announce the addition of the Under-13 age group to its competition, beginning in Spring 2015.
The SRPL provides an opportunity for the most competitive teams in US Youth Soccer Region III to play each other on a scheduled basis while also competing for placement in the prestigious US Youth Soccer Regional Championships, as well as the highly-competitive US Youth Soccer National League.
With the addition, the SRPL joins the Region I Premier League, the Midwest Regional League (MRL) and the Far West Regional League (FWRL) in providing competition for the Under-13 age group, in addition to athletes ages U14–U18.
The results of the SRPL Under-13 division will be used to promote teams to the Under-14 age group for the following fall season. The playing format for the Under-13 age group is currently in development, with a final announcement planned next month.
In addition to promotion within the SRPL, success in the Under-13 age group will also provide teams with direct qualification into the National League. The current Under-14 Region III Regional League representatives in the National League are filled by the previous season’s US Youth Soccer Region III Championships runner-up and by an open application.
The National League competition is for the nation's top teams in the Under-14 through Under-18 boys and girls age groups, consisting of a total of 16 teams per gender age group. The National League offers additional exposure to collegiate, professional and U.S. National Team coaches and offers the highest level of competition in the country as each team must earn its place in the league. In each gender age group, the top two teams from each division (Blue and Red) advance to the US Youth Soccer National Championships.
Each Region III State Association decides what will be the criteria for selecting teams to be considered for inclusion in the upcoming Southern Regional Premier League season. Typically, the prior year’s Premier League champion in an age group, the state cup finalists or the champion of an in-state league are potential candidates. Each State Association is invited to present at least two teams in each gender age group. Games are scheduled in the fall or the spring, depending on local customs in a sub-region or state.
