Preliminary Round Recaps:
13U Boys
A goal early and a goal late helped guide Indiana Fire Juniors South 06 Premier Red (IN) to a, 2-1, victory over TOCA FC MLS 06 (KS). William Greenwell scored the lone first half goal, finding the back of the net in just the sixth minute of play.In the second half, TOCA looked in control early while frustrating the Fire and finally got its break. A corner kick was punched and not cleared by the Fire keeper and the rebound fell to Colton Schimke. Schimke made no mistakes finishing close range through a crowd to level the score. Fire kept absorbing the TOCA pressure without really having a chance to trouble the TOCA end until late in the half. Right before the final whistle, Sam Caron got the ball on the right flank, cut the ball in towards the center of the field and hit a low bending shot to the back post to seal the 2-1 victory.
14U Girls
Alliance FC IN SCSA 05 Red (IN) and Pacesetter 05 Girls Villa Black (OH-N) both left Day 1 with a win, and ended Day 2 with a 2-2 tie. Pacesetter took the lead in just the 10th minute when Abigail Kristof floated a high shot up and over the keeper. Pacesetter’s Audrey Huffman made some key saves in the first half including one from close range after a dangerous cross into the box. Alliance finally equalized when a ball over the top found Emily Metzger. Metzger got in 1v1 with Huffman and finished her chance. Alliance had a key chance to take the lead after a handball in the box led to a penalty kick. Huffman not only saved the first attempt, but also the follow up and then the third chance was pushed wide. Alliance, however, did end up taking a 2-1 lead into halftime after a great pass split the defense and Madison Kramer beat the defenders with pace up the right side and buried her shot low to the far post. Pacesetter pulled one back early in the second half to level the score thanks to a Emily Marquis goal in the 47th minute. The score held and both teams earn a point and remain tied in points with four each.
15U Girls
It was a tale of two halves as Salvo SC 04 Orange (MN) tied Lakota FC 04 Premier Black (OH-S), 2-2. Lakota started the scoring in the 22nd minute when Chloe Pascoal scored off a corner. It wasn’t long before Lakota increased its lead to 2-0. A Lakota attacker broke into the final third and tried to hit a shot past the onrushing Salvo goalkeeper, Kayla Matuzak. Matuzak got enough of the ball to make the save but the deflected shot landed to Sarah Wordeman who finished from close range. Salvo battled back in the second half with goals from Kadyn Ellevold in the 55th minute and a Jenna Johnson goal just before the final whistle. The tie keeps Lakota and Salvo tied on points at the top of Group B heading into the all-important Day 3 of play.
16U Boys
Midstate Showcase (IL) earned a 3-0 win over Tonka United 03 Academy Blue (MN) and now sits alone on the top of Group B. Midstate got a first half goal from Samuel Moore and shutdown the Tonka attack to earn a 1-0 lead heading into halftime. In the second half, Midstate’s Christian Schanefelt started the scoring after receiving a long ball over the top from a teammate. Schanefelt noticed the keeper was rushing out and calmly floated the ball up and over for a 2-0 lead. Tonka attempted to truck through the goal disadvantage and fight its way back but Midstate added a third as Moore snagged his second of the game to seal the deal. A tie or win tomorrow seals Midstate into the semifinals while Tonka will most likely need a win and some help to stay in the running for the wildcard spot in the semifinals.
17U Girls
02 KRW Rush (KS) earned a, 1-0, win over Sporting Iowa East 2002 A1 (IA). The win gives KRW Rush its second tight 1-0 victory of the event as Alyssa Rowland scored her second goal in as many games. In the 15th minute of play, Rowland got just enough on the ball to sneak a shot just past the fingers tips of the Sporting keeper. Rush almost made it two with a shot from the right wing but a big hand from Cadence Talbert pushed the opportunity wide. Neither team managed to get on the end of another goal and the game finished 1-0 setting up a crucial final set of Group B games on the final day of preliminary play.
18U Boys
OBSC 01/02 Navy (IL) earned three more points after a, 3-1, victory over Sporting Columbia 01/02 Navy (MO). OBSC got the scoring started early as Sachin Advani found the back of the net in just the fifth minute of play. Sporting battled back towards the end of the half and equalized with a goal from Matthew Cathro in the 33rd minute. Sporting came out quick in the second half forcing a big save from the OBSC keeper. They once again almost took the lead as a booming punt by Sporting’s Cooper Deneke found it’s way to the opposite goal box. The ball bounced around and then out to the top of the box. OBSC’s keeper was out but Sporting couldn’t convert the great opportunity. OBSC began to pull away as a hopeful shot in the 70th minute managed to slip beyond the keeper. The shot hit the post and then bounced to the center of the box - where Benny Metzger was waiting - and he made no mistakes finishing from close range. Just a minute later, a ball into the box found Michael Campbell who finished his chance to make it 3-1. OBSC now sits on top of its group with six points and can clinch a spot in the semifinals with a tie or win in tomorrow’s game.
19U Girls
The 19U Girls started to separate on Day 2 as both CV Select (IA) and Topeka Select Elite Academy (KS) both won their games after tying each other on Day 1 of play. With only one group, everything comes down to the final games on Day 3 of play. While Topeka and CV sit in position for a rematch in the final, a win from either Baraca Academy CLB Martens 00/01 (OH-S) or FC Lake County IL) could vault them back into contention.
