The Executive Director reports directly to the Board of Directors, works with the Board to develop, maintain, and update NRU’s strategic and operational plans to reflect the long-term objectives of the Club, and oversees Club operations.

Established in 1983, NRU is a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing soccer opportunities for all ages and ability levels in Southwest Virginia’s New River Valley.  Currently the largest nonprofit organization in the area, NRU supports the activity of over 1500 members, with players from the U5 age group through the adult league.  Players can participate year round across a range of competition levels.  NRU hosts an annual Summer Kick-Off Tournament held on the beautiful Virginia Tech campus.  With strong community support and successful programs, both the tournament and the club continue to grow each year.   NRU is affiliated with the Virginia Youth Soccer Association (VYSA).

Key Functions Include:

•      Manage the operations, staff, marketing, and finances of the Club to ensure that Club has a long-term strategy and makes consistent and timely progress to achieve mission, strategic plan, and financial objectives.

•      Lead internal and external communications, as chief spokesperson for the organization.

•      Manage and build relationships with leagues, local facilities, and municipalities.

•      Work in partnership with the Board of Directors to develop strategies and plans to meet the organization’s mission, values, and objectives.

Specific Responsibilities:

  • Personnel Responsibilities:
    • Participate in recruitment, hiring, and management of staff across the organization.
    • Collaborate with Board of Directors to implement formal personnel evaluation and promotion process.
    • Promote active and broad participation by volunteers; leverage volunteer resources to achieve Club goals.
  • Strategic Planning and Financial Responsibilities:
    • Develop fundraising strategy and engage board and volunteers for assistance.
    • Produce and manage Club’s annual budget, including payroll and operating expenses.
    • Work with bookkeeper and Treasurer to produce monthly financial statements and an Annual Financial Report.
    • Lead team of Club Staff, Board Members, and Community Leaders to execute long-term plan for primary-use facility.
  • Marketing, Partner Development, and Community Engagement Responsibilities:
    • Collaborate with Board of Directors and NRU staff to develop and implement Club’s marketing and communication strategies.
    • Identify, cultivate and secure community partners for sponsorship and fundraising.
    • Enhance relations of Club with local organizations, governments, and businesses.
    • Serve as liaison to local and national soccer organizations and leagues.
  • Additional Functions:
  • Partner with organizing company/volunteer Tournament Director to plan and execute the Club’s annual Kick-Off Tournament.
  • Attend regularly scheduled Board of Director meetings
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications and Requirements

  • 5 years’ experience in business leadership preferred including:
    • Formulating and executing fiscal year budget and multi-year financial plan.
    • Organizing and executing multiple projects simultaneously.
    • Building cohesive teams.
  • Experience in soccer program management and operations including:
    • Translating strategic goals into quantifiable annual plans
    • Recruiting, developing, managing, and retaining volunteers and staff
    • Reviewing contracts and ensuring compliance.
  • Demonstrated ability to advance the Club including:
    • Understanding local, regional and national soccer environment and trends.
    • Building relationships with sponsors, local community, and local government.
    • Leading, managing and inspiring staff and Club members.
    • Effective interpersonal, networking, and marketing skills.
  • Willingness to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends.
  • Bachelor’s Degree (preferably in marketing, business administration or other business related studies) or equivalent work experience.

Salary plus performance based incentives will be commensurate with experience and qualifications.
