Position Summary

This position is a full-time, salaried position that will focus on the USYS grassroots level of refereeing to bring new candidates into our system and to keep referees at all levels, involved longer. The ideal candidate should have significant referee experience to help manage the strategic areas of recruitment, retention, curriculum development, implementation processes, and sideline behavior. This position will report to the USYS Director of Sport Development.

Primary Duties & Responsibilities

  • Develop comprehensive recruitment and retention strategies that will increase the supply of referees to meet the demand locally while highlighting the positive benefits of becoming and staying a referee.
  • Create strategies to promote refereeing as a critical component of the game while providing resources to support our 54 State Associations and thousands of clubs.
  • Develop a plan to positively impact local referee retention.
  • Develop, implement and evaluate anti-abuse and sportsmanship campaigns.
  • Collaborate with US Soccer’s Referee leadership to ensure common goals are defined and implemented.
  • Develop grassroots small-sided resources and curriculum for referees who have recently obtained their US Soccer referee license.
  • Create a Welcome Kit for new referees that will help prepare them for what they will encounter in the games they officiate over the near term.
  • Develop a career pathway starting at the local grassroots level and moving through the USYS National Championship Series and beyond.
  • Work cooperatively with the 54-member State Youth Associations, their State Referee Committees, and the US Soccer Referee Department Staff.
  • Other duties as assigned.

EXPERIENCE & QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Proficient with strategy development, process creation, implementation planning, and talent evaluation skills.
  • Solid oral and written communication skills and a familiarity with social media platforms.
  • Effective budget management skills.
  • Solid project management skills
  • Proficient with database management.
  • Detail oriented with ability to manage multiple priorities at once.
  • Knowledge of age-appropriate learning skills and history with designing sport-based curriculum.
  • Experience with SafeSport guidelines.
  • A passion for superior customer service.
  • Experience mentoring and coaching referees.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite: Outlook, Word, Excel and PowerPoint
  • Background in soccer and/or sports management/administration
  • Certified soccer referee, ideally with experience at higher level events.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS

  • Bachelors Degree from an accredited college or university required.
  • Frequent travel required.
  • Ability to work weekends expected.
  • Background Check required.
