SALT LAKE CITY (June 16, 2018) – The remaining teams are just one game away from glory, as the semifinal round wrapped up Saturday at the 2018 US Youth Soccer Far West Presidents Cup in Salt Lake City, Utah. Winners of Sunday’s Far West Presidents Cup final matches at the Salt Lake City Regional Athletic Complex will earn a berth to the 2018 US Youth Soccer National Presidents Cup, which will be played July 11-15 at the Grand Park Sports Complex in Westfield, Ind.
Of the 28 teams remaining, 10 come from Cal South, six from Idaho, five from Nevada, three from Utah, two from Arizona and then one each from Cal North and Colorado.
Of the returning teams, two – 17U Girls Broomfield Blast SC Magista (CO) and 18U Boys Barcelona AZ 00 (AZ) – have advanced for a chance to play for a title.
“Last year was our first year here so experience is playing a big factor this year,” Broomfield head coach Megan Remec said. “The girls came into this game knowing how tough it is to make it this far and I Think that kept them dialed in the whole game.
Now that they are over the obstacle of the semifinals, Remec talked a bit about what it will take to prepare for tomorrow.
“We are super excited and honored to get to play in tomorrow’s final,” continued Remec. “I think the first thing we have to do is dial back our emotions after a game like this. We need to get the necessary recovery done, get dialed in and then we will give the girls achievable girls for tomorrow in hopes to be successful.”
See how the teams advanced to the Far West Presidents Cup finals…
13U Girls
FC Nova Elite 05 (ID) has gone perfect through the tournament up to this point. With some tough defense, Nova is the only team in the age group that still holds a clean sheet and will look to continue that through the final. Nova will face Pateadores (CA-S) who have only allowed one goal and have scored 31 goals. Each team is coming off 4-0 wins in the semifinals and we will now get to see the top two age group goals scorers - Nova’s Samantha Smith (17 goals) and Pateadores’ Valeria Vargas Arceo (13 goals) - go head to head.
14U Girls
LVPSA 04 White (NV), who finished second in Group C, will get a second crack at the only team that has managed to beat them - FC Nova 04 Elite (ID). In the semifinals, LVPSA scored a 2nd minute goal and held on to the clean sheet for a win over WA Rush 04 A (WA) while FC Nova used three second half goals to earn a 3-0 win over Pacific Northwest Soccer Club (WA).
15U Girls
Real Henderson FC 03 Select JA (NV) notched its fourth straight win on the way to earning a spot in tomorrow’s final with a 2-0 win over Scottsdale Soccer Blackhawks (AZ). They will face Idaho Rush Premier 03 (ID) who came back to earn a 3-2 win in the quarterfinals and then used another late goal to win 3-2 against Arsenal FC South 03 (CA-S) in the semifinals.
16U Girls
LVPSA 02 Red (NV) survived a tight game in the semifinals and then defeated its fellow Nevada side, Players 02 Elite (NV), 3-0, in the semifinals. LVPSA will face PSC South Bay (CA-S) who also won, 3-0, in the semifinals. PSC’s Savannah De Lara and LVPSA’s Heidi Smith both notched braces in the semifinals to help their teams earn a spot in the finals
17U Girls
With a, 4-1, win over 3RSC RCL Black (WA), L30 Crush 01 (UT) advances to play in the final against Broomfield Blast SC Magista (CO). It took kicks from the mark to separate Broomfield and Pride Predators 01 (CO) after an intense back and forth game between the two Colorado teams. Broomfield’s goalkeeper, Sarah Hunter, made the final save necessary to help send her team into the 17U Girls final.
18U Girls
After allowing its first goal against all tournament, Sting Timbers 00/01 (ID) needed kicks from the mark to defeat Billings United Black (MT). Megan Drake scored the lone goal in regulation for Sting but Billings’ Brittany Burman equalized late setting up the kicks from the mark where Sting edged out Billings six to five. L30 Nitro (UT) was the Group A winner and has done nothing but win since day one of play. It will be up to each team’s offense to do their best to figure out two of the strongest defenses in the age group.
13U Boys
Soltilo FC (CA-S) has looked strong throughout the event and put up another strong showing in the semifinals with a, 3-0, victory over Group A winner, Boise Nationals Timbers 2005 Blue (ID) . Boise’s keeper, Benjamin Anderson, made big saves in the match including two terrific saves in the first half, including one through traffic but couldn't keep the Cal South team at bay. Northbay Timbers have scored four or more goals in each of their matches including their, 5-1, victory over Blitzz FC Gold (MT) in the semifinals. Soltilo will need to slow down Northbay’s Elvin Maldonado Lopez and Alvaro Picon who each have scored ten goals so far this event including goals against Soltilo in a 4-1 victory on day one.
14U Boys
After needing kicks from the mark to advance through the semifinals, FC Deportivo Warriors (CA-S) finished its semifinal game with a much more comfortable final scoreline of 3-0 against FC Nova Gold (ID). Central California Aztecs 04 (CA-S) used a balanced attack with four different goal scorers to beat Heat FC 04 AS (NV). The four top goal scorers in the age group will go toe to toe when the two teams meet in tomorrow’s final.
15U Boys
Heat FC 03 AS (NV) have shown off their scoring prowess this tournament by defeating all their opponents by a total of three or more goals. In the semifinals, Heat beat Real Colorado Olympic 03 (CO) after taking an early 2-0 first half lead. Late in the game, Alan Soriano added an amazing scissor side volley to help seal the, 5-2, victory. Boise Nationals Timbers 03 Blue (ID) has allowed just one goal this tournament behind a strong, confident defense. After allowing its first goal of the tournament, Boise held off any chance of a comeback in today’s semifinals after Toby Caldara scored to keep the Idaho side’s two-goal cushion heading into the final whistle.
16U Boys
After a comeback win in the semifinals, Heat FC 02 GR (NV) kept a clean sheet while getting first half goals from Jesus Espejo and Carlos Munoz. Heat will face SMUFC 2002 Blue (CA-S) who came back from being down 3-2 to win. After trailing in the first half, Jose Flores-Barriga equalized heading in halftime. Nationals agains took the lead but two late goals from Connor Colao and Alejandro Lopez sealed the comeback victory. Each team will be ready to battle, as they each have proved their ability to play and win in close games.
17U Boys
A pair of 2-1 victories today in the 17U Boys age group will pair Wolves FC 01 (CA-S) and 7 Elite Academy 01 South (UT) in tomorrow’s final. Despite the some great saves by the Eagles Black 01 (CA-S) goalkeeper, Lucas Berryman, Wolves earned the victory with second half goals from Erik Garcia and Erick Landeros. Eagles’ Salvador Aguilar scored in the 90th minute but the Eagles could not find the equalizer. 7 Elite started its semifinal off strong when Garrett Lewis found the back of the net in the 2nd minute of play. It looked like the game would go to overtime when Boise National Timbers’ Kristian Quiros leveled in the 82nd minute, but Oscar Quintero scored a late goal to send the Utah side through to the final.
18U Boys
After an overtime win in the quarterfinals, Boise Nationals Timbers 2000 Blue (ID) sailed to a 5-0 victory over 7 Elite Academy 00 South (UT). Five first half goals, including a brace from age group leading goal scorer Armin Hasanovic, should give the Idaho side major confidence heading into tomorrow’s final. Barcelona AZ 00 (AZ) is back in the final after a, 4-1, victory over Washington Premier FC (WA). An Alberto Castaneda Bobadilla hattrick helped lead the way and now the Arizona side will try to get the job done in the final this year after making a few adjustments to last year’s roster.
Notes from 12U National Championships Series:
12U Boys
After a narrow escape in yesterday’s semifinal against Scottsdale Soccer Chapman (AZ), Tuzos Academy 06 (AZ) cruised to a 4-1 victory over LVSA 06 White (NV). A flurry of goals in the second half was too much for LVSA to overcome despite notching a consolation goal just before the final whistle thanks to Jesus Venegas. A balanced attacked with four different goal scorers helped lead Tuzos to victory. In an all Cal South semifinal, Total Futbol Academy (CA-S) defeated Pateadores PYL-06 White (CA-S), 4-1. After a 2-1 halftime lead, Felipe Juarez added two in the second half to complete his hattrick and boost his team into the finals.
12U Girls
After four big wins in the quarterfinals for the teams participating in the 12U Girls semifinals, the teams played to two very tight matches. Legends FC 06 (CA-S) defeated fellow Cal South team San Diego Surf Select 2006 (CA-S) thanks to the game’s lone goal in the 15th minute by Taylor Norman. The one goal was enough and Legends heads into the final while allowing just one goal against all tournament. Legends will face another Cal South opponent in LA Galaxy Southbay 06 (CA-S) who defeated Albion 06 EB (NV), 3-1. After going down 2-0 at halftime, Albion’s Nia Vela pulled on back in the 51st minute. LA’s Kelsea Laughrey added her second goal of the game just before the final whistle to seal the deal and shut down any chance of an Albion comeback.
