New cycle of U.S. Under-20 WNT players full of US Youth Soccer ties

All 32 players have played in US Youth Soccer programs

FRISCO, Texas (October 3, 2014) — U.S. Under-20 Women’s National Team coach Michelle French has called in 32 players for a week-long camp Oct. 12-19 in Chula Vista, Calif. Each of the 32 players selected to begin the next Under-20 cycle has a connection to US Youth Soccer.

The roster includes 25 players who participated in the US Youth Soccer Olympic Development Program, the nation's original player identification program that has continued its tradition of elite competition and player development for more than 30 years, at either the state, regional or national level.

Among the US Youth Soccer ODP players to be named to the Under-20 roster is Katie Cousins, who was named the nation’s top high school girls soccer player earlier this year.

Document NameLowRes_19“Coming together with new people that I haven’t really played with much, it forces me to figure them out quickly and learn what works best,” Cousins said of US Youth Soccer ODP. “When I go to National Team camps, it is the same exact same thing. I’m used to it, which helps out a lot and gets me going pretty quickly with the other players.”

Several of the players were part of teams who competed in the US Youth Soccer National Championship Series at the Regional and National level. The group called in by French had a significant impact on the 2011 US Youth Soccer National Championships, as the Best XI featured four of the players attending the camp in Chula Vista.

Players who take part in US Youth Soccer ODP play against the top players in the country, while those who compete in the US Youth Soccer National Championships Series, as well as the US Youth Soccer National League, experience the challenge of playing against the nation’s top teams in a meaningful environment. Each program produces a competitive environment that appeals to collegiate and National Team coaches, giving players an increased level of exposure as they look to continue their playing careers at the next level.
