WESTFIELD, Ind. (June 24, 2018) – The field is down to the final 56 teams as the semifinal matchups are set at the 2018 US Youth Soccer Midwest Regional Championships in Westfield, Ind.
Teams comprised of state champions as well as US Youth Soccer Midwest Regional League wildcards, commenced day three in front of more than 230 college coaches with hopes of advancing to knockout rounds, and ultimately earning a berth to the 2018 US Youth Soccer National Championships in Frisco, Texas.
For 16U Girls Lou Fusz United Blue 02 (MO), they finished group play undefeated as they earned a spot on the semifinals on the last day with a win.
“I’ve enjoyed watching them grow as a team and have the success that they’ve had this weekend,” head coach Mike Preusser said. “We get to stay for another day of soccer now and do what we love.”
The 224 participating US Youth Soccer Boys and Girls teams in the 13U through 19U age groups represent 14 State Associations- host Indiana Soccer, and Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, Ohio North, Ohio South, South Dakota and Wisconsin.
Some highlights from Sunday's games:
13U Boys
Pennine United 05 (OH-N) solidified its spot in the 13U Boys semifinals with a win against Midwest United FC 05 Royal today. Pennine got started quick with a goal from Brady Mueller in just the eighth minute of the game. The game went scoreless until the final minute when Nicholas Trivisonno found the back of the net to extend the lead for Pennine who went on to win 2-0.
14U Girls
Sporting OFC 2004 Elite (NE) got off to a quick start as they won against 04 SLSG Premier (MO) to advance to the semifinals for the 14U Girls. Hanna Schimmer went to the far post to find the back of the net in just the eighth minute to give Sporting OFC the early 1-0 lead. Just 15 minutes later, Schimmer netted her second goal of the game and her fourth of the tournament to give extend the lead to two for Sporting OFC. They held on to that lead going into halftime. In the second half, SLSG controlled the pace of play with much of the play taking place in its offensive end of the field. They were unable to find the back of the net. Sporting OFC held on to win 2-0.
15U Boys
FC United 2003 Pre-Academy (IL) and Elite Boys Academy 03 Maroon Omaha (NE) battled till the end in a 15U Boys group game. The teams went back and forth with procession in the first half, neither team was able to capitalize. At halftime the teams were tied 0-0. Elite Boys Academy struck quick in the second half with a goal from Enrique Marin just two minutes in. One minute later Michael Sullivan netted the equalizer for FC United. Carter Novosad scored to give Elite Boys Academy the lead in the 58th minute. FC United’s Jackson turner scored the equalizer just seven minutes later. Neither team was able to pull ahead as they fought till the final whistle. FC United earned a spot in the semifinals with the tie.
16U Girls
Lou Fusz United Blue 02 (MO) earned its third win against KS Rush Academy 2002 (KS). The teams came out quick with both teams having an opportunity to advance to the semifinals. Lou Fusz struck first with a goal from Hanna Jones in the 17th minute. Lindsey Kuhlman netted the equalizer just 11 minutes later. The teams went into halftime tied at one a piece. Just two minutes into the second half Rose Behrmann netted the go-ahead goal for Lou Fusz. KS Rush kept the pressure on late as they got inside the box and multiple opportunities on goal with one shot hitting off the cross bar. Lou Fusz held on to the one goal lead for the win.
17U Boys
In a high-scoring 17U Boys match, Club Ohio 01 Green 1 (OH-S) pulled out the victory against Raiders FC (IL). The teams started fast with the first goal coming in the third minute from Connor DesRoches to give Club Ohio the 1-0 lead. Raiders FC quickly found the equalizer just a minute later from Josue Fernandez. Just nine minuted after the equalizer, Ludwig Conrad gave Club Ohio the lead. With four minutes left in the first half, Isaac Carnalla netted another equalizer for Raiders FC to leave the teams tied at two heading into halftime. Six minutes into the second half Raiders FC took its first lead of the game on a goal from Daniel Favela. DesRoches scored the equalizer for Club Ohio just 11 minutes later. In the 75th minute Club Ohio took the lead back with a goal from Francis Nardiello-Smith. Five minutes later Conrad netted his second goal of the game to extend Club Ohio’s lead to two. Damian Rincon cut the deficit to one for Radiers FC in the 83rd minute. Club Ohio was able to hang on to the 5-4 lead to advance to the semifinals.
18U Girls
MapleBrook Fury (MN) and Sporting Omaha FC Elite 2000 (NE) battled in an 18U Girls matchup for a spot in the semifinals. Sporting Omaha started fast with two goals in the first 10 minutes of the game. The first goal came eight minutes in from Lindsey Prokop and the second goal came a minute later from Gracie Parsons, giving Sporting Omaha the quick 2-0 lead. In the 31st minute Regan Zimmers extended the lead to three for Sporting Omaha, which they took into halftime. MapleBrook cut the deficit to one with a goal in the 62nd minute from Marie Sennes and her second goal of the game just a minute later. Taylie J Scott netted the equalizer for MapleBrook in the 84th minute. The game ended in a 1-1 draw, earning MapleBrook a spot in the semifinals.
19U Boys
Michigan Wolves 99 (MI) advanced to the 19U Boys semifinals with a win against Team Challenger FC (OH-N). In the opening minutes, Team Challenger earned a penalty kick that got saved by the goalkeeper. The Michigan keeper saved two early back to back shots on goal by Team Challenger to preserve the 0-0 tie. Michigan broke the tie in the 37th minute after a cross led to a header from Bryan Lendzion. Eight minutes later Juan Jaramillo extended the Michigan lead as he found the back of the net off a free kick. Michigan took a 2-0 lead to halftime. Early in the second half Michigan was awarded a free kick, but the shot hit off the crossbar to keep their lead at two. Andrew Roseberry found the back of the goal in the 69th minute to reduce the deficit to one for Team Challenger. Michigan extended the lead back to two just 10 minutes later with a goal from Mason Smith. Michigan went on to win 3-1.
Regional winners of the 13U through 19U age groups earn a berth to the 2018 US Youth Soccer National Championships, held July 23-29 at the Toyota Soccer Center in Frisco, Texas.
The US Youth Soccer National Championships will consist of US Youth Soccer Regional Champions in the 13U through 19U Boys and Girls age groups, as well as the US Youth Soccer National League qualifiers in the 14U through 18U Boys and Girls age groups to complete the field of 96 teams.
